The deluge of illuminated flags and red, white and blue holiday lights make it seem that Christmas has been misappropriated as a patriotic fest.

I am not anti-American, but I am offended when Nationalism is equated with and made part and parcel of Christianity.

Christmas should be a time when we focus on the miraculous birth of our God into humanity, with a spirit of universal love, forgiveness, and global community.

Maybe this Christmas, instead of our unending demands that "God Bless America," we should adopt the true Christian attitude of repentance for our past sins, and pray for God’s Blessings on those in the world who are truly suffering and in need.

Let us not forget that Christmas originated in a land for which most Americans feel little but disdain and contempt, and that the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is in no way tied to the red, white and blue of our flag, or the military might of the United States.
